I came across one couple who had the banns read three times! And I couldn't find a marriage for them ... All very curious. I put it down to them constantly arguing/falling out!

Mind you, one of my gr gr grandma's took out banns with one chap in the September 1868, they had a child in June 1869 and another one a year or two later and finally married in 1872!

Wonder if the groom didn't show. I guess you'll never know.

Many thanks Sylvia for your reply..

I had noted that the parties had not attended the would be first wedding... this is what had me wondering if anyone else had had any experience of anything similar.

Had you noticed that a Henry Bilby was a witness at the actual marriage...so at least he must have turned up for the marriage that didn't happen...mind you he was the parish clerk lol. That is if they were the same person...a bit of coincidence though..don't you think!

It is probably one of those infuriating curiosity's of family history that I will never know.

If you look at the image, there is a note written across the bottom of the April 15 Marriage entry

This Entry was made but the Parties did not attend

signed by H Bilby

so for some reason, they did not turn up for the first wedding, and the Banns would have to be read agan

I have heard of a second ceremony being held at a later date .... but these have usually involved a soldier or other military. It seems the reason there is that soldiers had to get permission of their officers to get married ...... if they didn't, then they couldn't get access to married quarters, support for their family, etc.

So they would have to get married again!

Thanks Madmeg..

She was a minor at both sets of the reading of the banns and also the subsequent marriage.

Just puzzled really...

WAs she a minor at the reading of the first set of banns? It could simply be that the wedding was delayed and banns had to be read again.

I have found the marriage banns for Simeon Brimelow Hargreaves and Mary Ann Barnes in April 1872 St Mary Islington however on the marriage register 15/04/1872 the entry is crossed out.

The banns are read again in June 1872 at St Mary Islington and the couple finally marry 18/06/1872.

Just wondering why this is...as Mary was a minor could this have caused problems ?

Has anyone else has come across this before please.

Many thanks

Linda
