Thanks folks. I'm assuming though that this info can only be found after a record is located? I wanted to know if it possible on freebmd to get this info before the search.

Clicking on "here" in the box that comes up after clicking the District brings up a list of subdistricts (parishes) covered.

What you need is the "Index of Places in England and Wales", which is available on the Genuki site:

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/places/regindex1-3.pdf

This is a PDF (Adobe Acrobat) file, so it's worthwhile downloading it and saving it to your hard drive for future reference. It contains a full alphabetic listing of townships and civil parishes in England/Wales, along with the county and registration district that each fell under, with date ranges. I find it invaluable.

In your example above, this is the entry for Hull:

Township or Civil Parish, County, From, To, Registration District, Notes
Kingston upon Hull, ERY, 1837, 1853, Kingston upon Hull
Kingston upon Hull, ERY, 1854, 1974, Hull, transferred to HUM in 1974

Lynn, thank you but Hull was just an example - I was asking for how to look for reg districts on freebmd.
Sorry to have caused any confusion.

Steven, it doesn't do this unless you are searching does it? Or is it me missing something as usual! This would be easier obviously.
Thanks for the message - any advice gratefully received!

Does anyone know please if there is a way of deciding what reg. district a place is under in certain years?
For example, Hull was not a registration district before 1868, and I can't see a way to decide what district covered it before then - or county either! - without doing a random search with a common name, clicking on district info and reading it!

This doesn't read very well, apologies if confusing! Can't think how to put it more clearly.

Many thanks

Jan
