Sylvia, Thank you so much! This information gives me something to explore and hopefully will turn out to be correct path.

It is very possible that both Martha and Ellen married between 1881 and 1891

I looked on freebmd for marriages of Martha dn Ellen Richmond.

I only looked for marriages in the Skipton registration distrctt as this is the region in which they seemed to live ......... they may always have married in other areas of course!


There were two marriages for a Martha Richmond registered in the Skipton district between 1881 and 1911

You will need to look on the 1891 Census and try to match bride and groom.

In the first one, she married either Joseph Bradley or Solomon Smith, and in the second either James Alderson or William Shuttleworth.


Similarly Ellen ............... 3 Ellen Richmonds married in Skipton during the period 1881 to 1911

He was born 1n 1898 to parents William and Martha. 1851 Census he is living with his sister Susannah and her husband Henry Spencer, a farmer of 25 acres. They live at 28 Green House, Binns Lane Glusburn. Listed in the house also is Martha his sister and a boy aged 2 years, Joseph, possibly Martha's son. Robinson is listed as Agricultural Labourer.

In 1858 he married Alice Tower 20th Sept at Kildwick Parish Church, 10th Nov 1858 she had a son named Thomas, she died oin 1858/59.

On 22nd Oct 1860 he married Mary Hellewell at Kildwick Parish Church. 1861 Census he is living at 14 Club Row, Cononley with Mary. They had two daughters, Ellen 1862 in Cononley and Martha 1864 also born in Cononley. Mary died in 1869 in Wharfedale. 1871 Census he is living at 77, Bradley Buildings, Menston with his two daughters and his Mother in Law Ellen Hellewell, a widow born in Cononley about 1803. His employment now is Plate Layer.

Robinson (Robert) married Martha Hindle in 1876 born in Steeton about 1845. 1871 Census, they live at 61, Knowle Gate, Keighley and have two sons: - Robert born Aug 1896 at Morton terrace, Guiseley and Joshua born 1878/9 in Keighley. His occupation is given as outside labourer.

1891 Census he lives at Sugden's Farm House, and his occupation is Farm Bailiff. He lives with his wife Martha and son's Robert, Joshua, daughter Mary born 1884 in Keighley and son Fred born 1885 in Keighley. He died 18 Apr 1899 at 9, Aireworth, Keighley, aged 64.

This is where we look.


First, www.freebmd.org.uk

that's the "official" site for all births marriages and deaths in England and Wales from the start of registration on July 1 1837. It is a free site.

The records are being transcribed by volunteers, and the site is currently up to about 1935, and progressing rapidly.

Records from 1985 onwards were put onto computer right from the start ...... and those records may be accessed at ancestry.co.uk, but you need a subscription to see them.


You may also find information on www.familysearch.org ..... this is the Mormon site, and I suggest that you pay attention only to the International Gernealogical Index, and then only to Extracted records.

Go to the home page, click on Advanced Search, scroll down to International Genealogical Index.

Extracted records have been transcribed from the actual parish registers.

Submitted records have been sent in by individuals, usually members of the Mormon church, and there is no backing documentation ...... take such records under advisement but do not enter in your tree until and unless you can find such documentation. Facts may well have been changed or made up to fit stories passed down in the family!

Could anyone advise me how to look for Ellen and Martha Richmond born c1859 and c1860 but I don't know where. Their parents were Robinson Richmond born 1835 at Crosshills, Yorkshire and Mary Heliwell born 1842 at cononley, yorkshire. They married at Kildwick, Yorkshire. Mary died in 1869. Robinson remarried but there is no mention of his daughters.
