This is very odd. She is born a Spinks, and if she had married before she would re-marry under her new name. I am really confused. Also, she was only 18 or so when she married John so that makes a re-marriage unlikely don't you think?

I have just found the birth certificate of George Frederick Roath
17th Nov 1857 and his mother was the informant and gave her name as
Rosanna ROAF formerly Norberry
I can understand the mispronounciation of ROATH but could she have been married before?
But on Free BMD she is married as SPINKS
Any help or advice here please?
cheers,
Jill

So where do you think Roseannah Spinks was on the 1851 census?
I've searched every which way.
Any ideas please?
thanks,
Jill

Yeah, I suppose you're right. It looks as if Father Christmas will have to buy lots of certs for me too!
He gives me anything I ask for.......
I did wonder if they were her parents, but it seemed odd that she was the only child in residence in 1841 census.
Thanks for the input.

Why couldn't they be her parents? I agree more likely to be grandparents but not impossible.

Just for ref:

if you order her birth cert it should give her parents' names, ref from freebmd (free to search)

Births Dec 1839 (>99%)
Spinks Rosehannah Aston 16 173

Why do you assume they can't be her parents? Lots of my ancestors were bearing children into their 50s

What a name!

But she was born Dec 1839 as Rosehannah Spinks

Was on the 1841 census in Suffolk St Birmingham as
Rosanna Spinks 2
with Stephen Spinks 50
and Elizabeth Spinks 50

These couldn't have been her parents so who were her parents?

Then was married to John Roath in Birmingham Sept 1857
as Rosehannah Norberry Edith Spinks
So where did the fancy name come from?
Anyone got any clues?
All help very much appreciated
Jill
