I am wanting to subscribe to an on-line database and cannot decide between Ancestry, Genealogist and Findmypast. My family is predominantly from England with a very small Welsh contingient. Can anyone advise which of the above is the best for me to subscribe to (or are there others?).

Thanks
Alan

Ancestry every time. Easy to search, has English and Welsh. You can put your tree on there. If you have mainly English & Welsh then you probably don't need a world wide sub. Ancestry has unlimited access and you can get a 14 day free trial.

I couldn't live without it!! Have researched the village where I live and you can look at every census image right back to 1841 and it gives a fascinating picture of how the village changed.

ancestry by a country mile!

I have Premium Membership, ancestry.co.uk, and am looking for family members in England and Wales ....... the Premium sub gives me access to everyhting that I need for my researches.

Steven ...... every site has problems with transcriptions .... none is perfect.

The advantage with ancestry is that one can submit name changes (click on Add Alternate Information) .............. they will add correction of transcription AND maiden names for the women. I've also seen additions of alternate names for children. That all depends on the users to make the changes ....... but every little change makes it easier for others to use.

If you just need UK then go for Ancestry Essentials. I have had Premium for a year but found the extra subscription a complete waste of money as there was nothing extra (mainly parish records that is) I couldn't get elsewhere for free

I'm in the same boat and you are confusing me now! Which Ancestry one shall I ask Santa for?

There are essentially three levels of subscription - rates shown are for one year

Essentials - £83.40
Premium - £107.40
Worldwide - £155.40

You can also subscribe monthly but this works out more expensive.

Essentials allows you to:-

* Create, grow and share your family tree online

* Learn family history hints and tips at the online Ancestry Learning

* Search key record collections - like Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes and Census records

* Be the first to find out about new record releases and site features with your monthly Ancestry membership e-newsletter

* Get help from the world's largest online family history community

* Access the largest online collection of British World War One military records - from pension and service records to medal indexes and more

* Discover further fascinating record collections - like the British Phone Books records, newspaper archives and University alumni

In addition, Premium also lets you:-

*Access invaluable pre-1837 Parish and Probate records

* Explore our Irish record collections

and Worldwide also give you access to

* Gain access to all Ancestry's global record collections - including Australia, Canada and the USA.

Do be aware that The Genealogist has a very dracnoian "fair use" policy.

First of all, there are restrictions if you want to access the site from more than one PC,

Secondly, if they think your usage is on the high side, the will assume that you are doing lookups for others. Unless you can prove that you are not, by submitting your tree with all the searched names on it, for example, they will bill you £5 for EACH entry you are unable to prove was for personal use.

Elaine,

It appears that you are allowed three changes of machine after which you are locked out. All search activity is logged by the site, and I believe that they have a limit figure (which I can't see published) which if you exceed, they may contact you regarding excessive use.

ancestry - they are adding stuff all the time, so I have to keep subbing (6 years now).

Go to the ancestry.co.uk site and get a free 14 day trial. Do as much as you want 24/7 - then back off and they should offer you 20% discount on a full sub. Otherwise go through quidco.com and get 25% cash back on the sub you pay.

It has to be Ancestry!

I have found many second cousin on Ancestry...world wide... including the grandaughters of my Irish Mum's aunt Alice.... that I know lived in New York USA when I was a child.

Mum used to write to one of her cousins after her Aunt Alice died but all contact was lost when my Mum died in 1992.

We are not going to lose contact again...my daughter will make sure that she keeps in contact with my second cousin's children....after we have gone to meet our Maker!

I am now able to put names to the faces on the old black and white photo's of Mum's American cousins and their children that she had.

Thank Goodness I never threw them away!

Elaine,

I can't speak from personal experience as I don't use The Genealogist but am just pionting out that they do have what some may consider to be draconian rules, and people need to be aware.

There was something in the press a year or so ago so perhaps they have relaxed things slightly to avoid further bad publicity.

any of the sites can get bolshie at times!!

Even good old familysearch did it on me one night ....... I must admit it was several years ago, but a message suddnely appeared on the screen that I had done too much searching, and could not do any more that night.

I thought that very interesting ............... as I never register with them, and never have been registered with them!

There are always stories around that ancestry can cut you off ....... and that they watch boards such as these to make sure that people are not breaking their T&Cs.
