There is a much easier method. It is called character map (charmap.exe) that has been in Windows since 2.0.
Go to the start box (lower left) and click on "Run".
Type "charmap" and then click "OK"

You should end up with an application called Character Map
You can choose any characters to copy and then paste (Ctrl-V) in any font you want.

PS in Vista in start just enter charmap in the box where it says "start search"

Alt + 0149 = • (Bullet)
Alt + 0162 = ¢
Alt + 0188 = ¼
Alt + 0189 = ½
Alt + 0190 = ¾
Alt + 0177 = ±
Alt + 0178 = ²
Alt + 0179 = ³
Alt + 0163 = £
Alt + 0128 = € (Euro symbol for those not in that part of the world)
Alt + 0151 = — (m dash)
Alt + 0150 = – (n dash)
Alt + 0187 = »
Alt + 0169 = ©
Alt + 0174 = ®
Alt + 0165 = ¥
Alt + 0177 = ±
Alt + 0247 = ÷
Alt + 0166 = ¦

NOTE: Codes generated with your Alt Key require using the Number Keys on your Numeric Keypad.
Using the Number Keys at the top of your keyboard will not work.


But laptop/notebook/netbook computers do not have a regular numeric keypad.
However, if you hold down your laptop's Fn key and Alt key simultaneously, certain letter keys will become a temporary numeric keypad.


A bit more trivia for those who were wondering what the m dash & n dash were:
An em is a unit of measurement in the field of typography. The width of the em space ( ) is defined to be 1 em, as is the em dash (—). By contrast, the narrower unit en is half an em.

I know you have it sorted now, but just incase....

if you are using 'Word' go to insert then click on symbol and choose mathematical converters it has the £ in the standard symbols option.

£ (Alt+156) & £ (Alt+0163) both work for me.

I was told about the one I gave you by someone here on GR. They had a whole list of keyboard shortcuts. You can google them as well.

And yes, it is something to do with the way your keyboard is set up. I think you can change it but I've forgotten how to do that.

I'm very grateful but feel I've entered a £'ing mad world.

Try holding down ALT and at the same time type 156 in the numerical side.
It works for me

Hold down the Alt button and at the same time type 0163.

I know it's trivial, but our new keyboard does not have a pound sign - it's a dollar sign instead!! Is there any way of printing a pound sign, I know there are ways to access symbols but can't remember how.
