Ive never heard of a shipping company called R & O, so i cant help but there is P& O, in which case the name is

Peninsular & Oriental Shipping line.

Hi George,

Thanks for that.

It's a bit strange this one, I've been in tough the the British Library who have confirmed the initials are clearly R & O but I did wonder whether it should say P & O. They suggested the Lloyuds Reg of Shipping should shed some light, hence the thread.

Do you know whether the peninsular & Oriental shipping line were around in the 1850 - 1890's and would they be in India?

Thanks again, Lou

Lou

P&O were formed in 1840 and the far east and the like were there main routes.
I will look again for R&O but it does not ring any bells

Hi George,

Thanks again, That does tie in with the time frame, I will look at the link you suggest.

The trouble is he was in India working on the ship Bernice, and back in England in 1871 working as an Engineer and he remained on all census after that untill his death in 1898.

Cheers, Lou
