I have a relative that is sure that their birthday is in January but it is registered as March. is there anyway to check when they were actually born other than ordering their birth certificate as they have lost it? They were born in 1910

birth registrations are shown in quarters


.... so March contains births registered between January 1 and March 31


The only way to see the actual date is to buy the actual certificate.

ahhh i was hoping you wouldnt say that! i did think that might be the case. thanks anyway.

sorry ive had another thought, on ancestry its listed as march. does this mean that its been incorrectly transcribed or someones just guessed at the month from that quarter?

If I were you I would order the certificate. It is the only way to have certainty, and the certificates often contain unexpected but useful information.

Once you have the date you can write to Buckingham Palace so they can receive a birthday card from the Queen.

Just for your information. A birth can happen in the previous year say later Nov/Dec. Since there was 6 weeks to register a birth it could have been registered in January the following year


It would show up as being registered in the first qt. which is mar qt

The registration quarter is just that ,the quarter the birth was reg in not when the child was born, for instance my late dad was born 28th Dec 1907. you have 42 days to reg a birth and his mum registered him in mid Jan 1908 ,so his registration is March qtr 1908

If you or someone else!! is thinking of the 100 year telegram from Buck House then they will want a copy of the birth cert for verification. My aunt was 100 years old in 2006 and the home she was in had to send a copy of her birth cert when they applied for her congratulation telegram

Surely he would need to produce his birth cert to claim his pension when he was 65. Also when your pension increases etc you get a letter from the pensions agency (or whatever it's called now) with your DOB on likewise tax office papers. He must have some form or other around the house from a government agency which will give his DOB

My grandad was way out with his age and date of birth and it was only when he applied for his pension that the true date came out.

When OAPs were introduced, there were thousands of claimants who were unable to produce b,certs. Many (like PP's mum) could produce baptismal certs, but some couldn't do even that. I think over a thousand census lookups were made to resolve some cases.
