James Thomas Newton Bayliss

James

James Report 4 Nov 2009 18:19

This man was baptised at Walsall 1794, married at St George the Martyr, Southwark 1814. I have bits & bobs of his family but cannot find him and wife Mary Jane in either 1841 or 51 census's. Despite trying all variations I can think of, no joy. Can anybody suggest any other means I can try please? Jim

I can't find a death for James after 1837 , so wonder if he died prior to that which would explain his absence from 1841 census?

Many Thanks to you both for your input. I have tried Alfred James route but have also drawn a blank there. And, Yes, it is the right child baptised at St George The Martyr. The name on census's has obviously been mistranscribed as people never wrote it themselves at that time.
My G Grandfather was born c1837/8 so likely that JTNB was still with the family. His wife Mary Jane died 1854 and I can't find her either.
The Alfred at St George in the East parish is definitely not the right one.

Hello Rambling Rose,
Many Thanks for your look ups. Re Frederick James and Charlotte, I have their marriage details and also their census. You are right to suggest that he maybe a correct son from the information available & I would just love to put him into my tree but as you can imagine, I am a little pernickety and want it to be absolutely correct.
You may be interested to know that I have 3 definite sons to this couple and all have James as a middle name which suggests that Frederick is from the same. The names I can be sure of from their Bap or marriage certs are Alfred, William and George.
As for the Mary Bayless you found, I can't add anything there as she is a visitor but Mary Jane does not seem to have been a common name and the one I found in burials at St Giles, Camberwell gives her age as 56 so born c 1798. I will go to Kew at some stage as the street index in the census's can be looked at which may give some clue to who she was living with.
If you have any further thoughts on how to find JTNB & Mary J in the 1841 or 1851 I would be very happy to hear them.
Thanks again for your input - Jim
