My relative was adopted - help please!

Hi

Can anyone help me out with suggestions on this?
I have a reli Edward Copps b1859, on the 1871 census it gives his adoptive parents as Tuffnell but I have his marriage certificate and on that it names his father as George Gray and the witnesses are not his family as far as I can tell so theres no help there. I havent been able to find a record of his birth or death certificate so what can I do now?

He might have made up a name on the marriage cert

This doesn't actually help a lot but here are the Tufnells in 1861.

Charlotte Copts is listed as sister to head of house.

Wife's name should be Fanny

Charlotte in the 1861 is shown as unmarried, so not sure whose sister she is unless James mother married again.

On the 1871 image, the family above the Tufnells are transcribed as Copeman, but the everything except Cop has been crossed out/written over.
