I have recently found a family member on the 1911 census that I did not know existed. I sent for birth cert which clarified she was born out of wedlock and gave no fathers name. The mothers name was that of my grandma. I have asked all members of the family if they knew of her and all have come back with the same answer NO. I have trace her back to the 1901 census which shows her living with her uncle and his wife.
What I want to know is how do I trace if she married, who was he if she did and were there any children.
I have four possible marriages from Free BMD records . do I have to send for all of them or is there another way of defining who she married. I have never trace a family member forward before, only family members backwards.
Ant suggestions please, as to what to do next.

As the father's name is not a clue, you would just have witnesses and her address to possibly help you. Can't think of a way to get around ordering them one-by-one!
Have you searched for anyone else with her on their tree?

Yes I have done that. There were two possibles, and I made contact with both but had only one reply. The birth listed on Genes were not known and Its a clear birth of Sheffield workhouse on the cert which takes no misunderstanding.

Would you feel OK about putting the details on here? Also, do you have Ancestry or FMP access - might just be someone on there with her in their tree.

I have put the details of her on my own tree so I presume it would show if anyone else was searching her name. This birth is my long since deceased fathers sister and I would love to know if I have cousins etc.

I am on FMP but have not put her details on that. I will try that. I have joined that for the 1911 census.

I meant putting her name on this thread - sorry to be so vague!

Its a bit difficult and sensitive and I need time to think about that. I think I will probably pursue the marriage certs as was first suggested.
Thanks for your tips. I do not really want anyone else to do the searching, but I need a bit of guidance. I hope you do not think I am being stand off ish. Its a bit sensitive isn't it.

Fair enough! I can see why you want to do this yourself, I would feel the same.
Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the understanding. I have never had to do anything like this before. Thanks.

As you know when she was born, you could specify perhaps that the bride had to be between X and Y years old......giving a margin of say 5 to 7 years. This way you would cut out more elderly brides marrying and so you would get a partial refund.
This would of course depend on her being truthful about her age.......

Check if these marriages are covered by a local RO index, as the local indices usually give some details on marriage location which might help you prioritorize your 4 weddings. Knowing the church does also ease access for any local parish records held in the county records office.

Plus, do bear in mind that at the time of her marriage she may have "invented" a father. Don't completely dismiss a certificate you do get that gives a father's name.

If you were to get a cert that names a father make very sure that you can find the bride concerned plus her father before you "rule her out".
