I have found 18 pages of part burnt information on my grandfather and it has been revealing. It had the death certificate for his young son, with a request for payment from the Army for the supply of said certificate, it also had a note sent to the commanding officer from my Grandmother asking if my Grandfather was ok as she hadn't heard from him. Also the details of the birth of his daughter, his wounds-including X ray details and his medals received. Fantastic information to bolster what information I already had.

i am just so sad that I cannot find the records for my 2 Great Uncles, both of whom died.

Kathlyn

much less than 50% of the records for the ordinary serviceman have actually survived

they were moved to a secure location in London at the start of WW2

It was bombed

The records that survived that were moved to a more secure location at Kew

There was a fire

we are left with what survived!

I have found some 15 pages of info re James Mawdsley on Ancestry WW1 info, but all I can find for his brother Abel is the document saying what medals he was awarded.

What am I doing wrong please????
