Potty, many thanks.
What you have mentioned in the first half is credible!

Forgive me, I never knew a National Army Museum existed! I will go of and look.....

Hi Allan

From what I can find, the 2nd Battalion Royal Hampshires were in India when WW1 started, from this site:
http://www.pauljerrard.com/hampshirer/hamps2ndbn.html - click on the WW1 link
but I cannot find any info before that.

I cannot find his service record on Ancestry, and as it looks as if he died before WW1, there is nothing on the Commonwealth War Graves site.

Found this on the National Archives site,

"While The National Archives holds the Soldier's Effects Ledgers for 1862-1880/1881 in WO 25/3475-3501 the National Army Museum holds a set of Soldier's Effects Ledgers for April 1901-March 1960. These ledgers were created as a list of the monies owed to a soldier who died in service. They do not list any of his personal items that may have been returned to the next of kin. The information they typically contain is: full name, regimental number, date of death and sometimes the place, next of kin and monies paid to the next of kin. The records from 1901-1914 also detail the date of enlistment and trade of enlistment.

As these records are not held in the main collections of the National Army Museum but in off-site storage, there is a fee, currently of £10, charged for the provision of a transcript of an individual's entry. Please contact The National Army Museum, Royal Hospital Road,"

If somebody could look up Robert William C Rose b. 1884 in Winton, Hampshire on Ancestry I would be very grateful.

Details are scarce, I have a photo that looks more Army Uniform than Navy. Relatives have a photo of his unit in Valletta, Malta. (2nd Battalion, Royal Hampshire's stopped there on the way to India!) My 82 yo Mum says he died in India from Cholera!

Is this enough info to go on? Many thanks.

Thanks for answering.
Believed Royal Hampshire Regiment.
1901 Census "Errand Boy" in Hampshire.
Believed joined Army, sailed to India and died of Cholera. (With many, many others!)

Will go away and look at 1911!

If they served during WW1 their service or pension records might be on Ancestry - but a lot were later destroyed in a fire and a lot of the remaining ones were badly damaged.

If you don't have Ancestry, post the details and I am sure somebody will look it up for you.

Alan
A couple of questions:
Which force?
Were they in the force on 1901 census?
Have you found them on 1911?
Were they called up for WW1?

Does anyone have any tips on tracing family members that served in HM forces after the 1901 Cencus. I've tried the National Archives Website but ended up in a loop. Help please.....
