Born in France - British Subject

Hi, can anyone help? I have an ancestor Daniel Davie born around 1846 but on the Scottish 1881 Census it shows him born in France as a British subject. Does anyone have any idea where I can get his birth record? I can't seem to shed any light as to why he was in France either?

Thanks

Denise

As he was a British subject his birth may appear in the overseas indexes on FMP. However, if his birth was registered locally in France you may have difficulties finding it. French birth records are held in the Departement they were registered in. There is, as yet, no centralised database. You could look on Geneanet but I wouldn't hold much hope.

As for why his family were in France, look to the Fathers occupation. A lot of Iron workers were recruited from Scottish shipyards to work in the French shipyards.

He is on 1871 census with wife Margaret and son Daniel. Perhaps get the marriage cert from Scotlandspeople.

He is possibly on 1861 census with mother Rosa born Ireland- as Davy and other children born in France.

The family are also on 1851 census as Davy (Dary) - children born France and England.

Also a possible for Rosa Davie on 1841 census in Dundee

IGI has a possible marriage in 1868 for Daniel to Margaret Shaw
