Margaret,

What you are geting are the Ancestry general search pages, not the specific ones i.e. UK Census. you were used to seeing. The pages are there it is just that their location isn't always obvious.

Try the links I listed earlier and let us know how you get on..

e.g. for UK census records

Well, all I can say is it seems to have sorted itself without me doing anything, though I don't have the facility any more to search for Fred Bloggs and it pulls up all censuses, bdms, and sometimes a member's tree at the top. Has that changed in the last few days?

So if I want to find Fred Bloggs on any census, It pulls up possible census dates and I have to choose each one in turn.

I agree with mgnv. You need to get your log-in sorted first.

Ancestry makes use of cookies on your PC to remember your preferences. For example I prefer the 'original' census search page with the exact box ticked. If I clear out my cookies relating to Ancestry, then it reverts to the 'new' page with the exact box unticked.

It is just a matter of re-setting your preferences - once you are logged in, that is.

I can't think of another way to get around it.

Something to check....

Scroll down to the very bottom and look on the right. It should say Ancestry.co.uk .

There should be a drop down list. It will say Ancestry.co.uk if you have United Kingdom selected and Ancestry.com if you select United States.

I wonder if this could be the problem?

Example. Search Ancestry all records for Ellen Alden born 1846 Hampshire, england. all I get is a load of Us census lists. She never went near the US. I have set Priority United Kindom. I don't get the choice any more to search UK and Ireland Records, that option isn't there.

What happened to my familiar search layout?

Why is it so hard?

I can't log in to Ancestry.com and don't want to. I just want the old facility back again.

Never mind. I am used to things in my life being awkward. Just add it to the list.

It is probably me, but I am going crazy, and I now have been through so many different screens I would be hard-pushed to phone Ancestry with any lucid dialogue.

Frank, the Ancestry.com won't let me in with my current username and password unless I sign up for a subscription. I have had this happen before and not resolved it properly, it sort of goes away in a couple of days. But the Ancestry.com window is totally different and only gives access to US sites, unless you click on "other" and with a bit of luck and a tail wind you might find UK Census 1861 on about the 13th screen.

I'm getting depressed about it all, it is another piece of aggro in my complicated life. I thought it was a hobby. Now it is a trial!!

Ignore me, I might go away.

I don't have an Ancestry sub right now, so I can't check stuff out, but I think there's two problems here. You can use your Ancestry sub on any machine, but to use it on the second machine, you have to have explicitly logged out on the first machine, and you probably didn't do that. Probably the best way to fix this is to give them a call.

I used to have problems getting the right page too. I'ld type in the URL ...co.uk and it would look at my IP addy and keep sending me to ...ca. Anyway, both have Search in the bar at top, and I can select Census and voter lists, and see the UK censuses. I picked 1891, and when the search page came up, I bookmarked it (i.e., added to favorites), and now that's how I always enter. Also, if you like to use the old style search, it's probably forgotten that too (it'll be on your old machine, but you can reset it here).

Get the log on problem fixed first - you might well have to redo stuff after that anyways.

It doesn't matter whether you go to Ancestry . com or Ancestry . co .uk It is ultimately the same web site.

Can you actually log in with your user name? In which case you should then be able to access the services you are paying for.

That is really odd as I tried logging into both sites and both sites accepted me showing all of my previous searches etc.
Google Ancestry, (top right) then click on the Ancestry.co.uk (not the one that says sponsored link) and login as normal.

Don't worry about Vista..........it's fine and I'm talking as someone who came from Windows 98 when my old friend went AWOL !

Remember to create New Folders in your Favourites..........

Open favourites then right click on favourites and select New Folder.

Name it accordingly......Genealogy.........Ancestry......Genes Reunited.... then they are easy to find and you don't end up with a mile long favourites list!
If you don't name them, you end up with New Folder 1/2/3/4 which doesn't help at all.

Hawkwind, I realise that. So I did log in afresh to Ancestry, but it still keeps shunting me to ancestry.com.

Will persevere, thanks.

The reason you are seeing different screens when you log into various sites is because all your previous cookies and preferences have been lost.

There is no solution other than to start again, saving your favourite pages and log-in preferences for each site as everything you had saved previously has gone forever.

As far as Ancestry is concerned, first of all log in to Ancestry.co.uk and make sure you save your login details. You should see your login name near the top middle to right of the screen.

These are the favourites I use for Ancestry. You might want to save these in your favourites.

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
for BMD records

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/census/uk/default.aspx
for UK census records

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/
for general searching

You will need to follow a similar process for other sites such as FMP, saving pages to Your Favourites as you go.

New laptop after PC failed. Having to reset all my links/favourites and not good at technology.

Problem now seems to be Ancestry, and I have had this in the past. I've deleted the link several times which keeps switching me to Ancestry.com where you can't access original records without a subscription. I tried my "UK" username and password (I have Worldwide Ancestry) but it won't accept it. If I manage to get to Ancestry.co.uk to look at census records, for example, the screen now gives me a list of possible records - all USA or other overseas.

Find my past also has a different screen - but is that just cos I am now using Vista as opposed to XP?

Feels like a whole new learning curve.

Hope someone can help an old dog learn new tricks.

Margaret
