Hi I've just started looking into my family history and find it so fasinating, but i can't find any birth, death, marriages records ANYWHERE. I know i must be doing something wrong. Could someone please give me some tips on how to find these records and other stuff if any.

Depending on dates this site is so useful

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

The work is done by volunteers so the dates are up to about 1920's

Civil registration began in 1837 for BMD's.

Another free site but this time for census
http://freecen.rootsweb.com/
Again the work is done by volunteers so you will not get full coverage.

1881 census is FREE on IGI. Ancestry and Findmypast

Jonesey has just reminded me of all his useful tips that can be found on the boards.

Over on left hand side of screen - use Advanced Search - and play around with words such as Tips of the Day - and you will find a lot of very useful information.

Shynna, be sure to do the most important thing of all - start with what you know and work backwards! Make sure you establish facts too, listen to family stories but back them up with evidence. Then visit the sites above and have a look.

For example, people often used 2nd names - this was really common at one time and has led me up many blind alleys I can tell you! So your family might remember Granny Smith as Flo when her real name was Edith Florence. You get the idea.

Best of luck - and most of all have fun!
