There are quite a few threads about this problem.

Not sure why this old thread was dragged back up?

I've had this problem for a day or two now. I have to put in my usename etc everytime I open up the site. Doesn't happen on any other site though.
I've just updated to AVG 9 too so I wonder if thats my problem.

Hi All

I'm having massive problems this week

Freezing on me but not on other web sites. Closing down half way through tests. This is very aggravating and time consuming. I have just rebooted but the problem remains. Same yesterday. And requesting passwords and email address, instead of remembering who I am.

Of course they say they are doing important maintenance but this is a
standard answer to me to stop me complaining and I'm not impressed.

I don't expect this written complaint to change anything.

Yes AGV certainly could be the issue, more likely to be that than the microsoft updates..

I've not tried the new version 9 yet but gather it doesn't live too happily with other clean-up programs. Its install wizard even offer to uninstall those it doesn't like.....! But why should I only use their product? I might not want to.

The trouble is some of these companies try and be too clever and get greedy , Its the old microsoft conquers all culture which got them into hot water in the end.

Some clean-up prgrams can cause log-in details to be removed. Have you run any of those recently?

It isn't a big deal it just means you have to log in again to each site you use. Only a pain if you can't remember the log-in details.....!

I had to log in today too! This usually happens when GR has been doing something big!

Yesterday I had endless problems with the GR tree, so the initial problem is still there.

The microsoft update is one of this things I was beginning to suspect as the culprit. Unfortunately I also upgraded my AVG free to the new version earlier this week, so there could be any number of things which could be altering how my computer handles GR at the moment.

Thank you Hawkwind. Yes my computer does usually remember passwords, and I haven't cleared out my cookies recently, so it looks like it's another manifestation of my problems! At least I now know. Roll on Sunday!

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 13 Nov 2009 10:17

No it isn't something new.

It is because your PC browser is no longer remembering your log-in details.

I use Firefox and get a message when first logging in asking if I want to remember passwords for this site. I don't know if IE has a similar option, but it could well have.

Clearing out your cookies may also cause log-in details to be lost.

I am having a big problem with my computer at the moment (my son-in-law is coming Sunday to sort it out), so I'm not sure if this is part of it or not - when I receive an email from GR or a GR member, I click on "click here to read the message", but before I am able to read it , I am having to log in with my email and password. Have never had to do this before - is it something new?

My download speed is 1.61Mbps on a 2 Mbps connection. All the other sites have been fine today. It is just GR which keeps freezing and dropping the connection.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 11 Nov 2009 17:36

Can't connect messages sound like an internet connection problem, or a problem with your ISP timing out.

Can you do a speed test and see how fast your connection is?

http://www.broadband.co.uk/broadband-speed-test/

If you fill in your post code it will tell you what your line will support. Don't expect miracles at this time of day when everyone is arriving home and logging in to check their emails as this is one of the slowest times of the day.

Right this minute I'm getting about 3Mbps from an 8Mbs connection which BT guarantee to 5.5Mbps

My tree loads in about 10-12 seconds.

Problem still hasn't cleared up, in spite of all the tweaking at my end. Keep getting the message "Sorry, there was a problem connecting to the Genes Reunited site"

AllanC

AllanC Report 11 Nov 2009 17:05

Has the problem cleared up? I ask because I just realised that when I was on GR earlier today the web address that appeared in my browser was genesreunited.com.au/boards...... not the usual genesreunited.com/boards...... and everything was running very slowly. So it might have been a problem with the GR server and connections routed via oz. Though I must say it seems a bit odd.

The GR tree works ok in both IE 8 and Firefox 3.5.5 . I have just tested it again now. I had the Firefox update yesterday so it can't be that.

It can't be the last lot of GR updates either as other people would be reporting the same problem. If you are getting wininet error messages then it could be your browser installation is corrupted. Try installing the latest version of IE and see if it corrects it.

Please clear your temp files like I suggested and try again. Doing this daily or using a program such as CCleaner is a good idea too.

Increasing the size of your browser temp file cache can also prevent the problem recurring.

Redharissa Report 11 Nov 2009 13:13

Thanks for the suggestions. Firefox updated yesterday so it is possible that something has gone wrong with flashplayer.

I used to be able to view my tree in internet explorer but after a previous GR tree "improvement" it won't work at all in IE now and throws up an error message about wininet!

AllanC

AllanC Report 11 Nov 2009 12:54

It MIGHT be a computer problem with an earlier cached image preventing display. Try pressing Ctrl and F5 simultaneously, which should clear it - if that is what the problem is.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 11 Nov 2009 12:53

Just checked mine and have made changes too. All seems fine.

Assuming all your software is current i.e. Flash Player, Browser, try clearing your temp files and try again. This can often do the trick, especially with the problem Barry describes.

I'm having difficulty updating my tree today as it keeps losing its connection to GR. Is it just me or are other people having the same problem?
