Hiding some family members on my GR tree

Good Morning!
I am still 6 months into my research on GR and I do allow access to my tree if there is a family connection but I would like to hide family members who are not pertinent to others trees. Please could someone enlighten me how to 'hide' those members on my tree, if that is possible. Thank-you

Go to 'My Account' and you will find an option to Hide living relations.

(It is not possible to hide specific individuals)

This now means that the following will happen:

Any individual in the member’s family tree with a year of birth within 120 years, and who has no year of death recorded in the tree, will be shown in the tree as ‘Living Relation’ – this replaces the name usually shown in the tree. This includes your own entry.

Their year of birth, gender, position on the tree and generic place of birth will remain but all other fields will appear empty to the viewer.

Photos will be hidden for living relatives too.

If the member is viewing their own tree it won’t change at all.

The 'real' name is still on the GR database, and as far as I'm aware will still appear in any searches / matches etc done by or with other members.

It is only when someone views your tree that the word 'Living Relation' appears instead of their true details.

Thank you very much for clear and precise information-I really appreciate your time.

I have just outlined a situation on another thread, where a related contact has used my own family details on their tree and has used the process to "hide" them. However, although you can't read them on their tree itself, when GR send out the "Hot Matches", all their details appear as they are entered.

On my own tree, where I have wanted to show that the person exists, but protect their privacy, rather than use the "hiding" process, I have typed in "Living Person" instead of the name.

Christine,

Yes, that is correct, as I said the real name is still in the database, it is only when someone views your tree that it is hidden.

However, whilst I can see someone wanting to do as you suggest with the odd name (to preserve a particular relationship within the tree, perhaps) if you are going to do this wholesale you might as well just leave the names off altogether.

After all, one of the reasons for joining this site is to match your names up with other members.

Hi Hawkwind

Yes that's true, but I can show my grandson his name at the bottom of the tree and how he relates to all those who preceed him. Its a very simple format that he can understand (none of the others I have seen are quite so clear for young children to understand). For my own purposes, my cousins etc are all there - just not named.

That sounds fine, as you have a specific purpose.

What I can't get my head around is why some members want to do the same with literally dozens or even hundreds of names. I just cant see the point of putting them on the web in the first place.

Personally I prefer to provide family with reports from my FTM program, This way I can easily tailor the presentation towards the audience who is to look at it.

For me, my GR tree is a list of names I am prepared to match up with others. to match with others.

Hawkwind, I have asked for FTM for Christmas - hopefully I will be able to do the same soon!
