Richard Leslie Cook or Leslie Best mystery

Carol Report 12 Nov 2009 15:17

I know that my great aunt Gladys Selina Bangs B. 1904 in Hull, married a Richard Leslie Cook in 1931 in Hull.
I have the marriage certificate and it is definately her.
All the facts match, age and year of birth, fathers name and occupation and known address.
Even the witnesses are names of known relatives.

However, nobody in the family remembers this Richard Leslie Cook.

I always knew her as Gladys Selina Best and heard that her late husband was a Leslie Best

I cant find a death for a Leslie Best in the right area.

My mum`s cousin remembers Leslie Best from 1937 or 1938 when she was a child, she says he was a conductor on the trams in Hessle Road, Hull

I never met him, only heard about him, so he could have died before I was born.

Could it be possible that the Richard Leslie Cook and Leslie Best are the same person.
If so, why would he and my great aunt change the name.

Any ideas where I go from here
Thank you

Hi Carol
Just a thought. Could Gladys have married Richard Leslie Cook first then a Leslie Best next ?
Lateral thinking !!!!!

I'm confused now !
Why, on the 1911 census are they Best when they should be Cook ?

Battenburg Report 12 Nov 2009 19:01

My grandmother married twice. The first time she married as Florence May Darby Burden.. Father John Burden
The second time as Florence Stubley formerly Darby. Her father John was dead by this time but she named him as John Darby. Both occupations the same

This wasnt known to me till I started family history. Gran was born as Florence May Darby. All her siblings are registered as Darby.
Their father was John Burden who later married as Darbey Burden.

I have discovered through a will that his grandparents never married. John Burden started using Darby after his grandfather died

Wow, thank you very much for all your help.
Sometimes it just needs a few more pairs of eyes and some lateral thinking.

It does seem as though Cook and Best got mixed up somewhere.
I shall definately follow up all your suggestions.

Thank you all once again.

Choccy, I have looked at the 1901 census on ancestry, but they have linked the wrong image.
Not beyond the realms of possibility that BEST has been mistranscribed as BERT

I will try another site and try and find the right image.
Thank you again
