James Mawdsley is recorded in the 1901 census as being 19 and living at home.

1911 census shows him still living with his parents but he is recorded as a "widower" and he has two young children, Doris born in 1906 and James born in 1910.

I looked for a marriage about 1905 and found 4 which could be him. I then tried looking for the death of one of these 4 names, but found nothing.

I next found his WW1 records and they state that he had now re-married and had a further child, He was killed in 1917. Any suggestions as to how I could find the name of his first wife without having to buy the birth cert for one of the children?

Have you looked on Lancs BMD for the children's births as some are recorded on there with mmn.

Guessing that the were from Lancashire as Mawdsley seems to be a Lancashire name.

Possible...??? as both the childrens births seem to be registered in Ormskirk, .....but I can find no death for either Mary Ann or Charlotte by 1911
