Many thanks everyone! The query has been answered, appreciate your time and advice.

I have 2 personal favourites while we're at it - Powell mis-transcribed as Towel and Smith as Waitt!!

I wouldn't rely on searching just for T surnames, if you follow Jonesey's good advice.
We once found a 'lost' family by entering the wife's name Sarah, name of village where she was born and her birth year, + or - 2 years.
I then looked for a surname with the right 'shape', ie. Tall or short letters, or any below the writing line.

Her surname began with Bel, but was mistranscribed to start with Sch.....but we found her !

As Jim says, you have to have 3 letters before the * to search on Ancestry.

If you have a POB and a spouse, you could try searching with just the first names. I have found a lot of mine this way when the first letter of the surname has been mistranscribed. Also, if you have the name of a child who would have been alive in that particular census, you could use that first name and put the parents' first names in.

I feel I should know this but I don't! Any advice would be much appreciated.
I want to search for someone by first name and first letter of surname. For example, John T.
Can I do this without trawling through all the entries? I have a feeling "*" might come into this somewhere!
Many thanks.

PS someone's just arrived so need to log off! Not being rude if I don't reply for a bit.
