Thank you Keith for your instructions, I have now found the right entry and learnt something new!

Thank you to everyone else to for the birth marriage and death suggestions for John, Elizabeth and Sarah - I am very grateful.

Hi LB,
If you go to the 1861 census and click on person search, then look at the bottom of the box and click on census reference search, if you enter the ref I put on the post (RG9; Piece: 3399; Folio: 68; Page: 1) they should come up. The Castles are transcribed as Carrel, John as Robert.

Thank you Keith and Polly.

It sounds Keith like yours may be the right entry. However, I can’t find it on ‘Find My Past’. At the risk of sounding thick can you help me please?

Many thanks

I wonder if Elizabeth died in childbirth or shortly after?

I wonder if any one can help me?

I have a John Roberts born c1837 in Batley, West Yorkshire ( a coal linder labourer?) with his parents Alice (born c1804 Batley) and John Roberts (born c1804 Batley) on the 1851 census and various siblings, living in Purwell, Batley.

I have him again on 1871 census with his mother Alice (now widowed) with daughters Susan (born c1863 Batley) and Sarah (born 1865 Batley) living at Hill Top in Batley. He is working as a coal miner and described as widowed.

However, I cannot find him on the 1861 census. The only entry I can find for a John Roberts born in Batley c1837 is that of a Blacksmith Journeyman, with his wife Amelia (born c1836 Scotland) and daughter Hannah E (born c1860 Liverpool) living in Roberts Row Batley.

I’m finding it difficult to believe that this is the right John and would welcome some advice.

Many thanks
