Sarah I have exactly the same scenario, I have all my tree on Ancestry so can't help with GR, sorry. It doesn't seem to be that unusual an event.

Joking apart I did hear from someone who is researching one of my wife's lines that they thought they had found a marriage between a brother and sister, and that one had lied about who their father was.

It does make you wonder how often it did happen - creepy though.....!

No I didn't mean marrying each other. The ones in my tree are per Birdsinanest's example.....!

I have quite a few of them.

In my tree there are two sisters, call them A and B.
A married C, B married D.
After A and D died, B married C.
No problem in Family Historian, but on Genes C has to be shown as 2 separate people, with notes saying they are the same person.

I have a Mr Ellis married a Miss Wilson
and a Mr Wilson married a Miss Ellis

Mr Ellis and Miss Ellis were brother and sister
Mr Wilson and Miss Wilson were brother and sister

I couldn't think of a better way to explain it!

They shared parents in law and their children shared a set of grandparents. The sister and brother in law situation is like a tangled web.

It's best not to think about this for too long. Brings on a headache.

Whilst GR will happily accept a gedcom containing multiple relationships it won't necessarily display them correctly. This is especially true for brothers and sisters marrying. I have examples in my own tree.

Hi Sarah

My tree is a real hotch potch, because of this lack of facility in GR have cousins married to cousins and two brothers married the same woman.
Even my own grand parents were first cousins - thus his mother and her father were brother and sister. It is really messy and have notes all over the place. The total number stated in my tree at the top of the page is very inaccurate.

Unfortunately the GR tree is two dimentional and cannot cope with this problem. Family tree programs on home computers can.

Against each sister show this particular male as the husband, that's show him twice. If there were any children from the first marriage show them attached to sister1/male. Do a similar excercise for sister2/male. It would also make sense to make a note against each entry that this is the same male that married sister1 or 2.

Provided this male is not descended from someone else in your tree, this will work around the problem. If he is descended from someone else in your tree, the problem has to be tackled in a different way.

You can't do it on Genes but if you have a software programme (something like FamilyTreeMaker) then you can add the details on there and then upload a gedcom from there to your Genes tree and it will accept it.

In my tree i have 2 sisters who both were married to the same man. He married the eldest of the sisters first then when she died he married the younger sister. Im wondering how i display this instead of having to put him down twice?
