Long shot......there is a birth for a Mary Hughes in Dec q 1870 but it is regd in Whitehaven which is also in Cumbria.

Thanks, Glitter Baby. I didn't know that. It'll be frustrating if it doesn't exist but at least I now know a good reason why. I haven't found any of the others either but I haven't spent much time on them yet.

I'm learning lots tonight! Thanks, PigletsPal I didn't know that either. It's probably not relevant here as Elizabeth's the youngest of 6 but her mother was from Ireland so it would account for her not being on the register if her Mum had returned home.

Was not compulsory to register births until 1875 so you might be unlucky and not find one


Have you managed to find birth registrations for Joseph, Dennis, Margaret or Winifred?

I'm hoping someone will be able to spot something I must have missed.

My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Hughes. I can find her in Carlisle, age 7 months on the 1871 census (father is Dennis, mother is also Elizabeth) . She's there on the 1881 census too which says she was born in Carlisle. My problem is I can't find her birth.

(There is an Elizabeth Hughes, born in Carlisle in 1872 but it's not her. You can see another Elizabeth Hughes, born in Carlisle but with father Francis, on the relevant census. The 1872 birth is her. I ordered the certificate to check)

Can anyone see a possible birth? Later on, she also used the name Mary so she may be registered as Mary. Alternatively her marriage certificate says Elizabeth Theresa so she could be registered as Theresa.

I'd be very grateful if anyone can spot what I'm missing. She must be there somewhere!
