Just found out he was actually in the Royal Navy not Merchant Navy. Thanks

Hi, thanks for your help. His name was Alfred John Breeds or he could be down as Alfred John Breeds French or Alfred John French!! Family split caused the name change at some point but we dont know exactly when. He was born in 1899 so assume heprobably served quite late during the war. We do know he was on the Q Ships but dont know from which port he sailed. Thats unfotunately all the information I have at the moment. dont know if its much use. If I can dig up anything else soon will let you know if thats ok. Once again thank you for help it is very much appreciated.

Hi

There are WW1 medals for merchant seamen, but these do not have any real information. Like their registration documents they are on microfiche at the National Archives at Kew. Merchant seamen were only taken on by the voyage/ship so there was no record as such.

I could have a look next time I go to Kew if you email me with his details.
