Quick question for some advice please, passed down through the family I have been lead to believe that a member of the family ended up in South Africa (Rhodesia as it was then), and another in New Zealand. How would I go about looking into whether this is true? Would searching passenger lists be my first place to start? Do South Arfica and New Zealand have any census records or anything like that.

Many thanks

Vicki

Hi Vicki,
NZ does not have census records available in any form. All electoral rolls are available as either hard copy or on fiche at all major libraries. BMD indexes are on fiche, again at libraries. Some old records are available on line but probably to early for you - I thinks it is births over 100 years ago, deaths over 50.
Want to put up a name/date or PM me?

Re: South Africa (Rhodesia as it was then),

Well, it's a bit hard to say since you don't specify when "back then" was, but it didn't become part of South Africa. It most likely is now Zimbabwe, but Zambia is also possible depending on the date.

Hi, sorry I didn't put specifics down, think it was because it was more of a general question. I am not 100% sure of the dates but at a guess it would be 1890's onwards. There were a number of brothers, some of whom were mariners so it's possible the 2 I can't find were as well, they are Samuel Lloyd Evans born c1872, Bangor, Caernarfonshire, Wales and John Arthur Evans born c1866, Anglesey, Caernarfonshire, Wales. John is listed as a Sailor on the 1881 census, then the whole family seems to disappear for the 1981 UK census, 1 brother and the parents reappear in the 1901 census, 2 other brothers have now been found in the US (at least I think they are the right ones!).

You can go into NZ BMD on line and look up - there is a time frame as said earlier.
They have just changed their web address which is now www.bdmonline.dia.govt.nz

PM me if you have problems and I will see if I can help you.

Cheers

Having checked the records for New Zealand with some very kind help, I may have located my JOhn Arthur Evans.

However I am still no further on with finding Samuel Lloyd Evans born 1872 Anglesey, Wales. I am pretty certian he settled abroad as family stories suggest that only my great grandfather stayed in the UK, all his remaining brothers scattered around the world. Any ideas on how to locate my Samuel?

I have checked passenger lists etc and not had much success.

Thanks in advance.
