I need to know if my Robert Bates was in the army (probably posted in Ireland) around the 1812 time.I dont know his date of birth or his wife, only that he had a daughter named Alicia born c1812 in Ireland (from her marriage cert). Has anyone got a clue what I can do please?

Surviving discharge paers for those discharged from the Army up to 1854 are name indexed on the National Achives Catalogue. Go to their website, then "Search the catalogue", then use WO 97 as the reference to search.

There appears to be 6 men of this name but some can be ruled out by dates and/or age. Birthplace is given, so you might be able to identify which, if any, is the right one.

If none, then it will be impossible to find out more about his Army career unless you know his regiment.

Worth looking at the Military births too, on Find my past. If the birth is there you can order the cert which should give her fathers regiment.
