I would like to pass on thanks from other members of my family who are also trying to track down Samson's movements!

Apologies for the delay - couldn't get back to this before. Maureen and Cassy, thank you! The entry in 1911 is almost certainly him! He was born in Shifnal in 1853 and had ( as far as I know) 9 children. In all other records he is an ironmonger - even on his death certificate, but I can believe traveller in cattle food! He was married in 1876.

I wonder if it could be him on the Baltic in 1914? He had long since abandoned his wife, Emily in Liverpool and maybe Mary was the replacement? His father's name was Samuel, so perhaps he used that name. Interesting that they were coming back from NY. Only 4 years later he was unemployed in Plymouth.

Thank you so much - this is opening up the mystery!

I was afraid the answer would be Ancestry, as I don't have a subscription - Findmypast either! Unfortunately, I don't know exactly, as there are 2 family stories I am trying to pin down.

Sometime after the 1891 census, my g.grandfather, Samson Langley uprooted his wife and children from Brighton and took them to Liverpool. One story says he abandoned them and decamped to Ireland with another woman, another says he went to South Africa. He doesn't appear on any census after 1891 (that I have been able to find).

However, we have recently found his death by suicide in Plymouth (confirmed ) in 1919. I am trying to fill in the gap. It's possible, of course that he went both to Ireland and South Africa. He seems to have been a wanderer. He was born in Shropshire, met his wife in Berkshire and had his first 4-5 children in Oxford before moving to Brighton!

I thought it might be possible to trace his movements on passenger lists. Is all this too vague?

ancestry has a number. as has findmypast.

If you put up the name and yob of the person you are interested in, then someone with the relevant package may be able to help.

If you know or suspect where they went. all the better!

What country were they going to?

I have often seen references on here to ship's passenger lists. Can anyone tell me where to look them up and whether or not you need to know when the passage took place and the destination?
