Thankyou all very much for your replies.
Matthew did marry Sarah Cook in 1822. I thought he died in 1854 as I found a burial record on Ancestry in Willesden 17 Apr 1854 aged 50. Maybe this isn't him then, if he died in 1845.

Best Wishes Carole xx

After a lonf search I can not find Matthew in 1851. What I did find though on the original 1841 census is that in the same Street there was a James Gilling who was a carpenter (as was Matthew). Could possible be his brother. I found this record for James in 1851.

Name: James Gilling
Address: Harrow Road
Enumeration District: Willesden
County: Middlesex
Birth Place: Buckinghamshire, England, Stoney Strat
Age: 61
Gender: Male
Relationship: Head
Marriage Status: Married
Occupation: Carpenter

It confirms your Buckinghamshire theory.

Hope this helps.

You say he died in 1854 but I did find this:

Deaths Jun 1845 (>99%)
GILLING Mathew Hendon 3 153 Scan available - click to view

If this is your Matthew then you won't find him in the 1851 census.

Matthew Gilling born around 1804. In 1851 he was a widower and died in 1854 Willesden Middx.
In the 41 census they are living in the Harlesden Green area of Willesden.
Trying to find where he was born poss Buckinghamshire but not sure. Can't find him anywhere in 51 so any help would be appreciated.
Thankyou Carole
