I am in the process of tracing an allusive part of my family. Alice McEvoy (born 1889 Oldham, Lancashire) is said to have had two children ‘a boy and girl’ and then to have died at a young age. The children ultimately ended up in orphanages.

I do believe that Alice and her husband/partner worked the Shambles pub in Manchester at some time after the 1911 census.

The only tangible clues are of the daughter ‘May I think’ ‘McEvoy’s I Think’ Silver Jubilee pamphlet depicting her as Sister Marie Gabriel taking orders.

Sister Marie Gabriel’s ordination was performed on the 26 April 1934 but I cannot tell from the documents in which order she served.

I am guessing that Sister Marie Gabriel and her brother were housed in Catholic orphanages in the Liverpool/Manchester area.

Could anyone possibly point me in a direction that would bring my search to a successful conclusion?

I have copied and pasted an email from a relative below and I also have a commemorative pamphlet Silver Jubilee of Sister Marie Gabriel taking orders.

Hi Ron Thanks for the e-mail. I would love any information you have on the McEvoy's. I have talked to my mum today and she has remembered some other information regarding Alice. She thinks she may have died young or something happened to her because her two children (a girl called May and a boy) were brought to Michael (known as Matt or Matty) and Margaret's house to be looked after for a while. They couldn't stay, as the house was already crowded and she believes they ended up in an orphanage. Later May became a nun around 26th April 1934 (Sister Marie Gabriel) but we don't know where. We think she died in the 1980's but all family records have been destroyed for a number of reasons. Don't ask!! This is why it has been harder to try and track down any of this side of the family and I kept putting it off! Don't know what happened to the boy or even what his name was. My mum also recalls someone saying they owned the 'Shambles' pub in Manchester possibly Alice's husband - does this ring a bell with anyone? Margaret Lavell (nee McEvoy) died 19th November 1961 and is buried in Moston. I do have a family picture of her, Michael and the family, as well as an individual photograph. Thanks for everything
