Hi ErinGoBragh & Janet, and thanks for your input.

It's possible the ring was found by someone in my family and given to our "Mary". Does the Mitchell Library hold newspapers for all of Scotland? I could look up the Edinburgh newspapers at Edinburgh Library. I think I'm on a hiding to nothing here! I might take a look into the death of Mary Wright MS Graham's father.

Thanks again

Diana

You could try geetting in touch with the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. I think they hold the newspapers. Of course it could be that someone found the ring. (My Dad found a ring and was unable to trace the original owner despite it having engraving on it)

That's my problem Kath - I don't know who "Mary" is. There are a number of Mary's in my family and i've checked out their father's deaths to no avail.

I only know the ring originally belonged to a "Mary" whose father died on 20 November 1869. No surname. No father's name.

Her husband's name was James Ormiston Wright and his mother was Mary Wright MS Graham. It could possibly have been her ring.

Thanks

Diana

Hi Diana,

Any clues as to where in Scotland Mary was born, it might help narrow the search.
Could you also give us her ancestors names/marriage dates etc, that way we would have something to try & search with.
There would be litterally thousands of men who died on that day in the whole of Scotland.

I don't think the records are kept in that way so I don't think yo will be able to find a list of all men who died on one particular day.

Can anyone tell me how I can get a list of all the men who died in Scotland on 20 November 1869? This would help solve the mystery of a ring I inherited from my grandfather’s sister. The ring is inscribed “To Mary in memory of father who died 20 November 1869”

My grandfather’s sister was Mary Lawrie Webster Grant who was born in Scotland in 1897 so it couldn’t be hers. Her grandfathers died on 31 July 1875 and 8 March 1910 respectively. Her great grandfathers died on 2 January 1861, 5 August 1873, 6 January 1853 and 19 May 1867. Of her great (2) grandfathers, three of them were born in the 1750’s, two of them in 1769 so they would be 100 years old, one in 1770 and two in 1774, which would make the youngest 95 in 1869.

I’m wondering if the ring came from her husband’s family. His mother’s name was Mary.

I know how to search and find a particular person, but a list of all the men who died on that particular day, 20 November 1869, might finally shed some light on the subject.

If anyone can help, I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks

Diana
