I stumbled across the following webpage on the Direct.gov website which gives a lot of information regarding researching birth, marriage or death certificates (just copy and paste the address into the address bar at the top of internet explorer)

For the more seasoned researcher there are some useful tables detailing registration districts that have now been closed and where the records have been transferred. There is also a table showing reference numbers against district which is useful for deciphering hard to read GRO indexes
