Can I get these via Ancestry? I have a subscription there but never looked for newspapers.

If not, I guess I need to wait until I can get back up to Liverpool to look in the local papers there. Thanks for the good idea of a way forward.

sorry, nothing obvious coming up in the Times - perhaps the American papers have online searches e.g. the New York Times?

That's a good idea Helen. I'll try to see what I can find via any newspaper type access.

I would be very grateful if you did find anything via your library access. I am looking for Elford Hugh Jones born 1909. Although he did enter the USA under his real name, but was actually deported under 'Hugh E Jones' - I an certain, however that this was him!

Thanks

you could try the Times Digital Archive to see if it made the papers, a lot of libraries offer this free (e.g. in Bucks, I can log on with my library card number from home), otherwise post name and other details here and I will have a look (send me a pm of you would rather not publish the details)

Hi
I have a relative who was deported from America on the White Star Line ship 'Baltic' in 1931.

He had been listed on a ships crew list arriving in the USA in 1929 and no mention of him between then and the deportation. I am assuming that he jumped ship and overstayed his welcome - hence being 'escorted out of the country' and sent back home to Liverpool! However, this is only a guess.

Can anyone give me any advice on where I might look to discover any more information on what he might have done in America to merit being thrown out?

Thanks
Viki
