I don't think that in these two cases these are alternative names that Ancestry members have added to the record. When this is the case you can see details of their amendment.

In the Murray case, there is a Hellen Murray in the family listed as Mother-in-Law. So, it looks as if the transcriber has assumed she is Bathia's mother and given Murray as an alternative name for her.

In the Atkinson case, Elizabeth is down as daughter to Isabella Woodend, so a similar assumption has been made.

At one time it was possible on Ancestry to tell the difference between member added alternatives and those done by Ancestry but that is no longer the case.

These assumptions by Ancestry can be wrong. I have an example in my tree but I can't agree with you that people should not be allowed to make corrections. My own family is so badly transcribed that I would have difficulty finding them in some censuses if I hadn't added an alternative (correct) name.

Thank you Somerset Girl and Satnav for your replies.
Allthough it does seem a bit daft to allow someone to enter an alternative name which could be wrong.
Merry Christmas Best Wishes Maurice.

I would appreciate any help with my question thank you.
Onthe 1816 census on Ancestry is a Bathia Munro born Scotland abt 1829 it also gives an alternative name Murray which was her maiden name.
The 1861 census for Elizabeth Atkinson born in Ulverston 1837
also gives an alternative name as Woodend, Elizabeths mother was married to an Atkinson then to a woodend.

I have both census from another source but there is no mention of this on the.
My question is who would do this and why.
Thank you for any help. Best wishes Maurice.
