One branch of my family found their surname had changed in the past because it was spelt wrongly on a birth certificate and never corrected!

Wonderful that someone corrected it, usually you just feel mystified :)

Thanks - I have checked census for 1911 and he is Thomas, not Francis. Don't know why I didn't think of that before!

I'd say he was called Thomas Jaques. When the original was written the vicar probably just got confused and wrote the same name for both fathers.

Probably was the wrong entry by the registrar or vicar and was corrected later when the error was pointed out .
My mum had 3 extra christian names one of which was Esther (after her dads mum) but the vicar wrote it as Hester and this was later corrected too by crossing it through and the correct name Esther written in the margin

Wrong information given or put into wrong column

I've received a copy marriage cert today for a marriage in February 1918. Column 7 refers to father's names. Groom's father is Francis John Monty, bride's father is shown as Francis Jaques with "Francis" being underlined.
Then at the right hand side of the cert it says "In entry no 166 col 7 for Francis read Thomas corrected on the 1st March 1918".
Does this mean that her father was actually called Thomas Jaques and the original cert was wrong?
Anyone come across this before?
