Thanks Madmeg.

I'm going to leave it now until after Christmas when I've got more time to concentrate on it.

Merry Christmas to everyone reading this!

Sonya, you might be able to produce a report of duplicates, to enable you to choose the ones to delete or merge.

Oh dear, I've got myself in a right old pickle. When I merged the duplicate entries, it looked as if they had become detached from their relatives, so I re-attached them............. and now I have heaven only knows how many sets of duplicates! I can't make head nor tail of it.

I think all I can do now is prune the lot and start again. :(

I don't have FTM, but PAF.
On that, when you add an individual you have a choice between a new individual or an existing one.
if you choose an existing one the relationships are automatically put in the correct place and the lines merge.

Thanks everyone. I'll have another look and see what I can do.

I don't know if it is the same on FTM 2009 but I have FTM 2006 and there is 'drop down' at the top under PEOPLE that has all sorts of ways of adding, fixing and merging relationships,

Not sure if this will help Sonya, worth a try.

You can't merge lines, only individuals. I don't have 2009 installed just yet, as yet but on the earlier versions of FTM you select People then Merge specific individuals. do this for each name that is duplicated.

I always make a list of each name and dob first and tick them off as I do each merge. Don't try merge all, unless you have experience with bulk merging. It is all too easy to end up in a mess.

I have the same - my grandparents! I just didn't follow the line for one of them. But I like to keep things simple.

I am using FTM 2009 and have run into a problem with a marriage between first cousins. I added a spouse with the same surname, which didn't surprise me because it is a common name in the area. However, I then ended up with a duplicate set of names, and soon realised that the happy couple were in fact first cousins, sharing the same pedigree with common aunts and uncles and the same grandfather.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to merge these two lines, please?

Many thanks
Sonya
