Thanks everyone a few things for me to think about there.

Family Historian defnitely, takes some getting used to and a little bit of trial and error, (Santa brought me this last year). I had Family Tree Maker before that and was happy with that for a long time, but the tree diagrams are the main thing which swayed me eventually, although you can do so much else on it.

The PAF program is fine as far as it goes and is, no doubt adequate for many people. However commercial programs such has Family Tree Maker are more sophisticated and offer more facilities and options.

Incidentally programs such as FTM are not "a gedcom", they are a Tree Program, in the same way that a .doc file is not a Word Processor,

Gedcom files, recognised by the file extension .ged are a universal file format which can be used to transfer genealogical data between different tree programs.

Why spend good money on a gedcom,go to the morman website where you can download free one of the best gedcoms around , family search 4.5 .
Takes a while to load because the site is always busy, but i have never regretted doing it myself and i have been using their paf file for 15 years.Fred.

Hi All,

I'm wanting to buy some software to keep another record of my tree on my computer. I have a fairly complicated tree with third cousins marrying each other etc. And it goes along way back.

I was trialling Family Historian though getting annoyed because the merging trees stuff up most of my records. (Probably a user error)

What software programs are people using or would recommend.

thanks,

Stephen
