What does it mean when a birth certificate states
"name entered after registration"?
Any advice appreciated.

I would imagine that the birth was first registered as "Male" or "Female" if they had not decided on a name before the 42 day registration limit, then when the name was decided upon, they re-registered with the name added.

Have you checked for a male/female birth with the same surname in the same quarter?

Thanks Keith, I wondered about that.
I know that the birth was female and know her name as I have access to the cert.
There was a doubt about the father though as he had bigamously married another woman a year before the birth of this child - who carried his name. Story is that he was put in prison for the bigamous marriage! How would I check on this and where?
cheers

Hi Jill,

Not exactly sure when you are talking about, but take a look at the national archives site here for a guide:-

Will go and look at that, thanks.
I'm talking about an actual marriage in 1941 and a possible bigamous marriage to another woman in 1942.
A son was born to the second (bigamous) wife in 1942.
A daughter was born to the first (legal) wife in 1943 and the name of the father was given as the bigamous man!
Hope that makes sense.
Oh what a tangle web we weave!
cheers,
Jill
