I would love to know how long it took from South Africa to Hampshire :-)

I think those 3 letters might be worth something, Chris.

Claire

Not answering your question but just to show that the post system was interesting!

I have 3 letters sent 'Par Ballon Monte' (Yes those things that go up in the air!).

One from Paris to London in 1889, the second Paris to London 1893 and the third Paris to Constantinople!

I hasten to add these are not my ancestor's scribblings but from a scrapbook my Grandfather bought in a London street market in the 1930's

Letters were sent by sea. They call it surface mail. I have seen one sent in 1889 from England to New Zealand.

Mum would sent me large parcels surface mail and it took about 3 months to arrive

Certainly was. My great-grandmother in England received a letter from her brother in South Africa in 1878.

Yes, definitely. No email though!

For a long time, I've had a copy of my family taking c1897.

This week a further copy of the same photo has turned up in of all places, Hawaii

I know that this photo got to Hawaii via New York but for the life of me I can't figure out how it could have got to the USA.

Please does anyone know, was there a way of posting international letters around that time?
