Without doubt ancestry is the best - you can even try it free for 14 days. Census 1901-1841, London marriage births and burials, images of the registry - WONDERFUL for us with London ancestors, I have saved an absolute fortune in certs, only wished theyd had them 6 years ago when I started.

www.ancestry.co.uk

WW1 pensions/army records, bmd many transcribed and searchable now. Oh lots and lots of stuff, in fact most people dont realise just how much is on there and tend to use it just for the census and bmd which is a pity.

Get your freebie trial. Oh and read the Tips for New members. Ill nudge it up for you.

Having had basic Ancestry for several years, I've recently upgraded to get access to London BMDs from 1754, which has proved well worth the extra cost.

Hi everyone..Happy Christmas.....local Recordfs offices often have free access to Ancestry..which is very handy..because even the basic subscription gives you access to Census and Bmd's..........I go to Matlock Records office quite often, and although I have Ancestry myself..free access whilst I have been there is very handy.

I actually believe that Ancestry is possibly the best research site around.and i have recently upgraded.........well worth it.

All the best.Derek (Derbyshire Records Office maniac)

Irene, the best site value for money is Ancestry.

Thanks for your help. A present of a subscription is a good idea. I live in Spain so uk libraries are not much use to me.
merry christmas x

I forgot to add that many local libraries allow free access to Ancestry if you are a member, and local record centres have copies of censuses - but that may not be so convenient.

And 1881 census is free on familysearch.

Pay as you go is okay if you know what you are looking for, but it is too easy to keep topping up your credit in your enthusiasm.

K's idea of a present is a good one.

There are other free sites such Cheshirebmd (I think there are nine counties now) and some other local sites have some online info.

When I first started researching family history last year I used Roots.UK on a pay to view sub. Lot count of the amount of credits I lost by looking at the wrong records.

Free BDM is exactly what it says free although only records to 1930/40 are currently on the site.

I asked my hubby to buy Ancestry sub for me for birthday. Best present he has ever bought me.

If you only want to look for a few records that are not on Free BDM then there are loads of GR members willing to do look-ups if you ask nicely.

Hope this helps

There seems to be lots of companies that offer subscriptions an credits for searching BDM I would prefer a pay as you go but anyone know which is the best value for money?
