Glad to hear it is working, to be fair, though, the help line is unlikely to spot a hard drive problem, this is something you can usually only do when sitting in front of the computer.

Finally got it working. After two weeks snowed in I finally got to our local computer expert in town on Saturday and he sorted it. Turned out to be a problem with the hard drive. I wouldn't want to have to rely on the help line though, after phone calls and e mails I am still waiting for a response.

Looking forward to many happy hours learning how to use it

What exactly is your PC specification and operating software?

I have just installed FTM 2010 on my clapped out pc, (as my son says) which has 2gb Pentium 4 processor, 1 gb memory ram and XP operating system.

Hi Michael,

If you are running Windows XP, are you fully updated with SP3 and all other required updates from Microsoft.
Google microsoft updates.

If you are running Windows Vista, are you fully updated with SP2 and all other required updates from Microsoft.
Google microsoft updates

If these are all updated, make sure you uninstall your FTM 2010 attempt before trying to reinstall it.
If no joy,I would try contacting Ancestry by e-mail.

Let them know what your operating system is, RAM memory size, Hard drive size etc. and the problems you are experiencing.
Tell them the exact error messages you are receiving and hopefully they can help.

I found myself chuckling with glee that I've still got the 2005 version and am not changing it, then began to feel bad about chuckling when I know I would feel as desperate as you do.

I get this message re things having to close and sending Microsoft an Error Message quite often. I usually try again and it works.

I am to techy, but I read somewhere that you can disable the message re Microsoft and carry on without it, but I'm not sure that is sensible.

I hope you sort it soon.

Well I have just tried all that and still no luck.
I also found some info about this on the FTM site and followed their advice, this didn't work either.
Stuck on what to try next really but Iwill just keep trying

All very good advice posted here.

First Ccleaner from fillehippo as found below, will clean out all rubbish, temporary internet files etc from your computer.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
To download DO click on Large green button Top Right...........It's free.

If you require to disable any Anti-Virus and Firewall programs that are running, remember to disconnect from the internet FIRST!
You don't want any nasties getting into your genealogical research.
...........AND............. switch on your firewall, antivirus before going back online !

Recommended for FTM 2010 are Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
1 GHz Intel Pentium III (or equivalent)
460 MB hard drive space for installation.
512 MB of RAM
Problems may occur using only 256MB Ram giving error messages etc.

I don't know if you would get away with Windows 2000 for your upgrade but the above settings are also for FTM 2009 so you never know !!??

Merry Christmas everybody.

I've just got FTM2010 Platinum for Christmas, great, except I cann't get it to work.
It seemed to install ok then a small screen appears saying application initalising. Ithen get the following message-

'family tree maker 2010 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'

It then gives me the option to send an error report ot Microsoft.
I have tried reinstalling the software and it made no difference. Ihave also tried temporaily suspending my security software in case there was some sort of conflict, it made no difference. Anybody got any ideas I'm desparate
