ED = Enumeration District
Institution = Just that i.e. Workhouse
Vessel = again, just that, Ship or Barge

Only persons residing in this country would be entered on the census, this will include those on board ships in port. (I think RN ships in port abroad were also included)

Persons residing abroad would not have been included.

The GENUKI website has information on the censuses - this page gives access to the enumerators instructions, which explains how they were to be completed.

Firstly - forgive me if this is not the right place for what I want to find out. On the Census information, could someone explain the ED, Institution, Vessel headings? Also, I have found that a great-grandfather, although alive at the time, was missed off the 1901 census. He fought in the Boer War so is this a possible reason that people got left off, or would they have mentioned that he was serving? Many thanks. Marilyn
