Could it be short for Pendlebury? There is a Pendlebury somewhere near Manchester, I think - the only other ones I can think of are Pendle Hill (which is near me) and Pendleton (also near me - a little village!) - wonder if somebody shortened Pendlebury?

There is nothing on any census on Ancestry matching the 1911 info - I think your friend is going to need the marriage cert...........
