I have been unsuccessfully trying for years to find the right birth for my g grandmother to enable me to find parents to continue this line .
I have never been able to find a marriage for her , nor has any member on here .
As. there is more than one Elizabeth Mason born about the right time i am trying to narrow it down .
On the 1901 census she states she was born in Hull ,now on the 1911 census she states she was born in Brigg Lincolnshire ( about 1861/60. and married for 24 yrs .
Any one know which reg district i should be trying to find the birth in .

Is Mason her married name or maiden?
Give us the 1901 census and we will try and trace her earlier
Could she have married more than once?

To be honest i have no idea if she married twice , she has been a big pain in the rear to trace .
1911 and 1901 census she is living 69 Benton Way Wallsend , Northumberland .
She is married to Charles Smelt , he used various names , his real name was Stephen James .[ mistranscribed as Smell on 1901.)
There first child was born in West Sculcoates Hull 1889

Yes thats them,
I have birth certs for Jessie and May .
Jessie was born 1889 , May was born 1895

I have just looked at the one myself on free bmd but this is the big problem .She states she was born in Hull on 1901 then she states Brigg on 1911 .
As she can,t be found on any other census it is a long shot to find parent for sure .

I would hazard a guess that she was bor in Brigg as that is what she stated in 1911, I have often found on the previous census's the place of birth was the same as the rest of the family, just made life easier, methinks

It would be more positive if she could be found on any other census
and to put a spanner in your suggestion 1911 census Charles Smelt say,s he was born in Scarbourgh Yorkshire which i know is untrue , he was born in Beverley Hull and he states this in all other census that he can be found on.

My mother taught me to always tell the truth , why didn't their parents do the same ? lol

I thought his name was Stephen James.James being the surname

I have traced Stephen James Smelt and family way back , he was the son of Robert Cooper Smelt and Sarah Ann Walker .

It is a bit confusing for him .
He was born Stephen James Smelt Beverley 1860 .

On his first child birth cert 1889 he uses name just Stephen ,
on child born 1895 he uses Stephen James
On my nans cert ,she was born after the 1901 census he uses Charles Stephen , nans marriage cert he is Charles , death cert he is Stephen James .
