1. Copy the gedcom GR have emailed to you onto your drive. Your email should have an option such as "Save Attachment" to do this Make sure you know where it is saved to.

2. Open FTM

3. In FTM, Select File (top left) then Open. select the gedcom you have just saved and it should automatically load into FTM.

The only time you loose your existing GR tree is when you upload a new gedcom file to GR from your PC, the opposite to what you are doing.

'Ello Sylvia G

you will also need a family tree program on your PC/Hard drive....then you can import the gedcom from GR into that.
you will find a gedcom button at the bottom margin of this page.

Hi

Check the Help button at the top of the page. Go to FAQ.s and type in Downloading tree. You will find instructions on downloading in Gedcom format.

I have been given a 250GB portable hard drive for christmas by my son.
My goal is to use it for my family tree as a backup etc and for photos.
My problem is I dont know how to.
My family tree is on GR ONLY although I do have lots of printed backup. I have ancestry but no other family tree programmes.

I am a computer illiterate and need someone who can tell me in PLAIN english how to put my tree onto this hardrive.
I will then be able to print it off and take the instructions step by step.
Hopefully one of you wonderful people can help me.
I am not very quick on the uptake so please make it simples.

Thankyou in anticipation. SylviaG
