Thanks Glitter,
Oliver Gibbs 1878 mother was Louisa Gibbs (maiden name)which indicates he was illigitimate, I have been unable to trace a father (currently waiting for his birth cert. but expect fathers name to be a blank. I'm surprised his father is shown on his marriage cert. as Oliver Gibbs and wonder does this mean the father was alive at the marriage or will I have to order the marriage cert. to see if the father is marked as deceased. Do you by any chance know if that's the case please?

The father's name on a marriage cert. is quite often made up when the person marrying is illigitimate. However he may be named after his father.
