I can't make out the twirly writing on the census form, one of my anscestors comes from Ireland - Ebilston, Ebileton??? It could be a T at the start, but the next letter looks like a b. Anyone know alikely contender for the village name?

Is this an English census form or one from Ireland? Just wondered if I could look at it on Ancestry.

It is the Scottish Census of 1881. My gr grandmother presumably got talking to the census man as hers is the only entry where a village name is included with the generic 'Ireland'. It never happens again in the census or marriage or death forms.

Her name was Savage and the town name ends in -ilston or -ileton. Which makes me think it is a North town. She was in Scotland by 1867, the year she married my Scottish and ?Catholic gr grandfather in a C of S ceremony. Certainly our family has been Catholic since the dawn of time and it surprised me that the first Irish ancestor I have found was in the only Protestant ceremony I have found.

Unfortunately we can't view census images from Scotland on Ancestry.

hi dripdo
Have you tried increasing the size of the image sometimes this makes the writing easier to understand.

Also when I'm having trouble deciphering the entry it can help to highlight it by left clicking the mouse/pad and dragging across the area.It changes the background to blue (on my screen) and sometimes it makes it a bit clearer to read...just a thought so hope it helps

I'd be happy to look at it if you can scan it. Just send me a pm (private message) by clicking on my name.
