Hi Cathy

I will be going to Kew tomorrow and will check out the record. Won't take long.

Thanks David, but I'm a complete failure......

I tried going on national archives again and got nowhere so I sent them an email last night explaining that I'm technically challenged hoping that they might explain how to find what I'm looking for !
I got a reply earlier on but it just gave me a link to go to.

Which I did and although I didn't find anything for Peter Goudie I'm pretty sure I found my brother in law.

I then tried to order the records but everything went pear-shaped and I now don't know if I've ordered hundreds of pages or if I haven't actually ordered anything at all!

Sorry I didn't reply sooner I had to go and lie down in a darkened room!

I have sent them another email anyway in the hopes that they might take pity on me! But somehow I doubt it!
I really appreciate yours and Terry's help though, thank you.

Thanks for confirmation of the date. The index ledger (BT 334/95) covers 1936 to 1940, so should be able to find his record easily in BT 334/93.

hi cathy no luck on merchant navy records, you sure of date of birth is right, nothing showing on war graves. a lot of records were destroyed, a lot are in canada, maybe another way is were he came from start at war memorial then maybe local british legion.if his name is not showing up on pro catalogue they are unlikely in kew but don't give up

Hi David,

well, scotlandpeople have his death record as 1938 under Marine register / minor records, gros data 031/ MR 0095
His name on that record is Peter Shuan Goudie
His birth record has him as Peter Shewan Goudie

I'm hoping the death certificate will be here by the end of the week
so that i can add it to his profile on my husbands tree. Poor boy was just 20 when he died............. it's so sad!

These records are in ledgers at the National Archives. There may also be a microfiche record for him in the merchant navy registrations.

Will have a look next time I go to Kew. Are you sure he died in 1938?

Hi Terry,

His name is Peter Goudie born 1918 in Tingwall, Shetland and died in the Phillipines in 1938 while he was in the Merchant Navy. I think he died of malaria.
I tried looking on national archives but I just kept going around in circles!
I got to the number bt something or other but had to give up in the end. Are there no free records to view on that site?
Thanks for the offer of help anyway,

Cathy

Thanks for getting back Terry.

I'll try looking on national archives but I never have much luck with searching their records!

I've just ordered the certificate from scotlands people anyway so i hope it's worth it!

Kind regards,
Cathy

Thanks Freewheel,
I had a look but no luck!
Terry, I tried going to procatalogue.com but it said forbidden!
Is that the right address?
I have found him however on scotlandspeople and under district it says
Marine register / minor records, so I am going to send for the certificate and hope there are plenty of details on there.

Thanks to you both for your help.

Hi,
I'm looking for the death record of a Merchant Seaman that died in the Phillipines between 1936 and 1940. Does anyone have any ideas of where to look for information please?
