Thank you all for your comments, especially Nutty Bongo. It sounds like a phone call to London Metrpolitan Archives might well be worthwhile..

Best wishes

My ancestors were in Darenth in the 1901 census and they are listed as inmates there in that census. Irene

Hi there,
I had a relative in Lincoln Mental Hospital and all records are locked for 100 years. I had to write to the archives that held the records and they had a doctor connected to that. I had to write to say who i was and how i was related and why i wanted to view the records, i had to pay for this to be done to find the records and then viewed them in the archives. They have to lock everyone elses records so that you can only view the one you want, now my record was for 1918 so not far from the date of yours. Best to contact the archives and ask as some of the records are held with the local authority. I will take some time, mine took about 6 months, but it was worth it in the end.

Thanks Janet and Piglets Pal.

I've been on to the LMA site and down loaded some information to read on mental hospitals in the area so hopefully going in the right direction.

Best wishes

I would expect that the nearest Mental facilities would have been Leytonstone House (Now a Tesco) Claybury (Now a housing development) or Brentwood (also a housing development)

Thanks Helen. I've tried using the link but not being an experienced user, I haven't been able to turn up much. Having said that, I always find the National Archives website difficult to use anyway.

Being quite a newbie, I've now decided to join the East of London family history society in the hope that someone there will be able to help and advise further.

Best wishes

Hi

I wonder if someone could please give me some advice on how to go about finding records for a relative who may have been admitted to a mental hospital during the 1930s from the Manor Park/ Forest Gate area of London/ Middlesex? Also, if there are records available, what information they are likely to contain.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Hilary
