Thank you Ann in Glos,

Just been googling and you are right RN ships were driven by steam ,
also been looking for the steamship he was living on when he married , which was the Kinsale of Glasgow and finally found it on the Glasgow City website, but can only view it on Scran , but I am not a member and it is just a thumbnail print ,
regards

You might be able to find his records on the National Archive site. Some RN records are downloadable at £3.50 a time.

In 1861 I would think RN Ships would be driven by steam.

Thank you SatNav and Barbara,

I think I might have found my gr.grandfather on the 1861 census on board a royal navy ship, his occupation on his marriage certificate was a steamship stoker, so I was thinking he might be in the merchant navy , I haven't been able to find him in Scotland in 1861. He was born in Ireland but lived and married in Scotland.

Basically - The Royal Navy is the sea fighting arm of the British services. and the Merchant Navy carries cargo and the men are employed by different private shipping lines.

The Merchant is civilian
The Royal is military.
